At this point there is probably no one who hasn’t seen the video, made in the Fall of 2010, of the most amazing 3 year old kid conducting the finale of the Beethoven 5th Symphony. At the time the video was going viral, I would wager people sent me the link no less than 100 times.

What were those weird sideways trumpets that Anita and Ken played?

On this week’s performances of the Brahms 4th Symphony, you may have noticed that WSS trumpeters Anita Cirba and Ken Wilmot appeared to be holding their trumpets sideways, and the sound was a little bit different.  It wasn’t that they were holding their trumpets awkwardly; they were playing a different kind of trumpet altogether.

Eileen Young, WSS bass clarinetist, was recently named conductor and director of music of the Salem Band, the oldest mixed wind ensemble in America. She will begin conducting the next Salem Band concert series in September.

WSS Musicians Premiere Student Composition

The world premiere of The Fugue, an original composition by 15-year-old Community Music School student Elijah Wood, will be performed by a string quartet of musicians from the Winston-Salem Symphony: Corine Brouwer and Andrew Emmett, violins; Noah Hock, viola; and Jennifer Alexandra Johnston, cello. The performance takes place as part of the Sunday, May 22 CMS Honors Recital.

It goes without saying that Winston-Salem is incredibly fortunate to have Robert Moody as our Symphony’s Music Director. Since 2005, “Bob” has reinvigorated the orchestra and chorale, added new series and concerts and lead unforgettable performances with our tremendous orchestra, chorale and world-renowned artists. While he has been busy leading our Symphony, Maestro Moody has also been an in demand conductor with orchestras and festivals throughout the United States.

Corine Brouwer Receives Rave Reviews in Portland

Our very own Corine Brouwer was highlighted as the guest artist on a recent concert cycle by the Portland Symphony in Maine, and performed (as always!) to critical acclaim! Corine performed Astor Piazzola’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, then joined PSO concertmaster Charles Dimmick (who performed with the WSS this past January) and Benjamin Russell for Chris Brubeck’s Interplay for Three Violins, also performed here in January. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be part of this important celebration, and to enter into our first partnership with Old Salem during my tenure. The Bobcast: Haydn’s Creation

World renowned choral conductor Donald Neuen (Maestro Moody’s teacher!) is the guest conductor for Haydn’s musical depiction of the beginning of the world, The Creation.
