Jonathan Blalock, tenor

Mr. Blalock left a lasting impression with his performance in Paul’s Case at The Prototype Festival. Alex Ross in The New Yorker declared it as one of the top ten musical events of 2014, saying, “The tenor Jonathan Blalock was transfixing in the title role; Spears’s score glistened beautifully and eerily around him.” Additionally, Heidi Waleson of the Wall Street Journal listed the performance in Opernwelt as one of her Top 10.

Blalock’s recent performances include Ramiro (La Cenerentola) with Opera Roanoke, The Burrowing Mole (The Fantastic Mr. Fox) with both Opera San Antonio and Odyssey Opera, Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) with Cedar Rapids Opera, Count Almaviva with LOFT Opera in New York City, Remendado in a semi-staged Carmen with Pacific Symphony, and a debut with Des Moines Metro Opera as Pedrillo in Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail.
Highly acclaimed for his work in 20th and 21st Century Opera, Jonathan has appeared in a number of world premieres, including Huang Ruo’s An American Soldier with Washington National Opera, The Secret Agent with the Center for Contemporary Opera in NYC and the Armel Festival in Hungary; Jorge Martin’s Before Night Falls with Fort Worth Opera; and Paul’s Case with Urban Arias. In addition, he made his Virginia Opera debut as Cégeste in Philip Glass’ Orphée, and has sung with Fort Worth Opera in the same composer’s Hydrogen Jukebox.

Other career highlights include West Edge Opera (Hydrogen Jukebox), The Portland Symphony (The Magic of Christmas), Broadway Takes the Stage (Carnegie Hall), The St. George Choral Society (Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor), Count Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia) with Opera Company of Middlebury, Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) with Nevada Opera, Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore) with Opera in Williamsburg, Handel’s Messiah with the Lexington Philharmonic and Winston-Salem Symphony, Carmina Burana with Las Crucas Symphony and Fenton (Falstaff) with Mercury Opera in Rochester.

Jonathan trained as an apprentice with Santa Fe Opera, covering two Rossini roles: Rodrigo (La Donna del Lago) and Condulmiero (Maometto II). He also sang Tonio (La file du Régiment) and Ottavio (Don Giovanni) with IVAI in both Isreal and Montreal; Remendado (Carmen) as a young artist at Opera North; and Normanno (Lucia di Lamermoor), Howard Boucher (Dead Man Walking), and Remendado as an apprentice with Fort Worth Opera.
