Matthew Troy
Assistant Conductor
Matthew Thomas Troy was appointed assistant conductor of the Winston-Salem Symphony in May 2008. In this position Maestro Troy also serves as the music director of the Youth Symphony and the Winston-Salem Symphony's education director, a position he has held since 2006. Troy has previously held positions as conductor of the Fibonacci Chamber Orchestra, Wake Forest University Orchestra, assistant conductor of the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra and conductor of the Salisbury Youth Orchestra; assistant conductor of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) Symphony Orchestra and viola/violin faculty member at the Music Academy of North Carolina where he received awards for teaching excellence.
Troy has led performances with many nationally renowned soloists and received praise for his innovative programming with the Fibonacci Chamber Orchestra. In 2007, he had the opportunity to conduct Midori in concert as part of her Orchestra Residencies program with the Winston-Salem Symphony. Recently, he competed in the Jordania International Conducting Competition and attended the prestigious Pierre Monteux School in Hancock, Maine where he studied with Maestro Michael Jinbo. Other guest conducting performances include the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, Carolina Chamber Symphony, Kensington Consort, Philharmonia of Greensboro, Gate City Camerata, and Triad Chamber Music Society. Troy is a frequent conductor/clinician and has led numerous high school and middle school All-State and All-County clinics throughout North Carolina.
Troy earned a bachelor's degree in music at UNCG, where he also completed his master's degree in orchestral conducting as a student of Maestro Robert Gutter. Mr. Troy has also studied with renowned conducting pedagogues Maestro Gerard Schwarz and Maestro Kenneth Kiesler at the Conductors Retreat at Medomak.
This season Maestro Troy is very excited to be conducting on Pops, Discovery, Side-By-Side, Mary Starling Educational Concerts, the Holiday Concert, and Youth Symphony Concerts. In addition, this season Maestro Troy will debut as guest conductor with the Portland Symphony Orchestra. In his free time Troy enjoys reading, studying new music, traveling, and singing.
