Winston-Salem Symphony Presents Discovery Concert for Kids Peter and the Wolf

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (MARCH 7, 2019) – The Winston-Salem Symphony will present Discovery Concerts for Kids performances of Peter and the Wolf, by Sergei Prokofiev. Under the baton of Jessica Morel, the Winston-Salem Symphony’s Assistant Conductor, two performances will take place Sunday, April 7, 2019 at 2 and 4 p.m. at Brendle Recital Hall in the Scales Fine Arts Center on the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. Fun concert-related, hands-on activities for the whole family will be available between the shows from 3 to 4 p.m. in the lobby.The concert also will include The Wild Woods, a piece by rising young composer, Viet Cuong, which was commissioned by the Winston-Salem Symphony in 2016. The Wild Woods is a prologue to the Peter and the Wolf story, set the night before the events of Prokofiev’s piece and presents the scene from the grandfather’s perspective.

Estelle Bajou will narrate both The Wild Woods and Peter and the Wolf. Bajou is a Drama Desk and NY Innovative Theatre Award-nominated actor and composer. She has appeared on Broadway in Once and has acted with PS122, Edinburgh Fringe, New Ohio, LaMaMa, 59E59, and American Repertory Theater. Her television credits include Boardwalk Empire and Prohibition and her film credits include Steven Spielberg’s The Post, Chaplin of the Mountains (which was filmed in Iraq), and Fireworkers. Dancers from the Winston-Salem Festival Ballet will join the Symphony for Prokofiev’s timeless tale of a brave boy, his grandfather, and their quirky animal companions. Each character is represented by a different instrument and melody, from the bird’s flourishing flute to the grandfather’s grumpy bassoon, creating a classic that listeners of all ages will remember for the rest of their lives.

Single tickets for Discovery Concert for Kids Series are $7 for children, ages three to 12 (ages two and under, free) and $18 for adults. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Symphony Box Office at 336.464.0145 or online at WSsymphony.org.

Between the two concerts, beginning at 3 p.m. a variety of child-friendly activities will take place in the lobby. Guests will have the opportunity learn take part in a variety of hands on activities, arts and crafts, and more! They also will be able to hold, play, and learn about instruments at an instrument petting zoo. Pre-concert activities are included in the price of the concert ticket.
