Symphony Unbound at The Ramkat

Symphony Unbound

Symphony Unbound brings music out of the concert hall and into the community. Experience “classical” music in the least expected places: local bars, restaurants, nightclubs, bookstores, galleries and more.

Musicians of the Winston-Salem Symphony showcase the coolest contemporary chamber music, while guest artists from an expanding portfolio of musical genres collaborate with us in hip arrangements of their hit music. From dynamic bluegrass duo Mandolin Orange and folk rockstar Hiss Golden Messenger at The Ramkat to Hank, Pattie, and the Current at Muddy Creek Cafe, Symphony Unbound is setting trends and reaching the community on a number of sonic levels.

Previous Concerts

Mandolin Orange

November 10, 2018
Symphony Unbound came to fruition with an inaugural concert featuring bluegrass duo Mandolin Orange at The Ramkat, a venue for indie rock and folk. Symphony musicians began the concert with Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, then shared the stage with Mandolin Orange in new arrangements by guitarist/composer D.J. Sparr.

Hank, Pattie, & The Current

March 9 & 10, 2019
The second Symphony Unbound concert was a double-header at Muddy Creek Music Hall and Cafe in Bethania, just north of Winston-Salem. A string quartet of Symphony musicians opened with Mozart’s beloved Eine kleine Nachtmusik; afterward, bluegrass band Hank, Pattie, & The Current joined for a foot-stompin’ good time.

The Legal Wood Project

June 6, 2019
Husband-and-wife duo The Legal Wood Project, aka WSS assistant concertmaster Rebecca Willie and WSS percussionist Eric Willie, led an eclectic mix of cool sounds during a dinner Unbound at Quanto Basta, a fine-dining Italian restaurant in downtown Winston-Salem. Audience members also got an impromptu lesson in mallet grip technique!

Hiss Golden Messenger

November 2, 2019
Symphony Unbound returned to The Ramkat for a concert featuring Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale, a dramatic, seven-instrument work led by guest conductor Mélisse Brunet, and folk-rock phenom Hiss Golden Messenger in arrangements of his hits plus cuts from his new Rolling Stone-acclaimed album, Terms of Surrender.

Rachel Barton Pine

March 7, 2020
Symphony Unbound visited Krankies with a string quartet comprised of WSS members and Rachel Barton Pine (and her young daughter!) for a set of heavy metal and hard rock arrangements.

Dori Freeman

July 19, 2022
