WSS Announces 2012-2013 Season: Discovery Concerts for Kids

The Winston-Salem Symphony’s Discovery Concerts for Kids 2012-2013 season has been set. Get ready for three fun and interactive concerts designed to tickle the interest of the young and young at heart. For this new season, the Discovery Concerts will be held on Sunday afternoons rather than Saturday and will now begin at 3 p.m. instead of 2 p.m. They also will take place at a new venue: Reynolds Auditorium at 301 N. Hawthorne Road in Winston-Salem.

Space Rocks!

Blast off into space with flight commander (Associate Conductor) Matthew Troy and his orchestral crew of space travelers and enjoy music from popular sci-fi films like Star Wars and Avatar. Some of the music will be paired with projected images; others will be narrated by Ray Collins, Adjunct Professor of Theatre at Wake Forest University. Audition Dates Announced for WSS Youth Orchestras

Auditions for the Winston-Salem Symphony Youth Orchestras Program will be held Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21. Auditions are open to all students in the 1st through 12th grade. The Winston-Salem Symphony Youth Orchestras are currently comprised of three full orchestras for aspiring musicians. Premiere Strings is a 20-30 member string-orchestra for beginning musicians, while the intermediate-level Youth Philharmonic and the advanced Youth Symphony each consist of 60 to 75 members. These ensembles perform several public concerts annually.

Winston-Salem Symphony Names 2011 Peter Perret Youth Talent Search Winners

The Winston-Salem Symphony has announced the winners of the 2011 Peter Perret Youth Talent Search competition. The winner of the junior division, for students ages eight to 12, is pianist Nicholas Allgeier, age 12, of Raleigh. He is a home-schooled sixth grader and a piano student of Derison Duarte. Taking first place in the senior division for students ages 13 through the senior year of high school is Dustin Wilkes-Kim, 14, a violinist from Winston-Salem who is a 9th grader and student of Sarah Johnson at the UNC School of the Arts (UNCSA). Winston-Salem Symphony Presents Classical and Romantic Adventures

The Winston-Salem Symphony presents music of Tchaikovsky, Mozart and Prokofiev at its March concerts, Classical and Romantic Adventures. Concerts will be presented on March 12 at 7:30 p.m., March 13 at 3 p.m., and March 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Stevens Center of the UNC School of the Arts (405 W. Fourth Street). Due to the illness of concertmaster Corine Brouwer, the Winston-Salem Symphony (WSS) announced today the following changes for its Scheherazade concerts on January 7 and 9, 2011. WSS associate concertmaster Daniel Skidmore (pictured) will be the concertmaster for both performances. The Winston-Salem Symphony will present Handel’s Messiah on December 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. Fifth Street in downtown Winston-Salem. These performances, presented in honor of longtime Symphony supporter Dr. A. Robert Cordell, feature guest soloists Sari Gruber, soprano; Mary Gale Greene, mezzo-soprano; John McVeigh , tenor; and Troy Cook , bass-baritone.
