Winston-Salem Symphony Announces Honors to Two Long-Term Supporters

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 29, 2023) – The Winston-Salem Symphony recently bestowed honors on two of their long-term supporters. Mary Tucker received the Distinguished Service Award, and Gerry Gunzenhauser was named Honorary Director. Both accolades are reserved for distinguished service to the Symphony’s “Bringing Music to Life” mission.

The Distinguished Service Award was created in 2016 to recognize exceptional service to the Winston-Salem Symphony over a prolonged period. “Some people contribute in visible ways, while others make monumental contributions quietly and in the background. Such is the case for Mary Tucker, this year’s recipient,” said Merritt Vale, President & CEO of the Winston-Salem Symphony. Tucker credits participating in making music as a child for extending joy through her adult life. Her desire to share music was instrumental in establishing the Symphony’s Concert for Community, which combines Youth Orchestra members with their professional counterparts. Tucker created an educational endowment to ensure the Youth Orchestra program thrives into the future. She served almost 15 years on the Symphony’s Board of Directors.

The Honorary Director role is a lifetime honorific title bestowed upon individuals who make extraordinary contributions to the Symphony over a significant period. Gerry Gunzenhauser joined the Winston-Salem Symphony Board of Directors in 1986 while Chief Financial Officer at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. During his distinguished 36 years on the Board, he served as Board President and Chair of the Executive, Finance, Human Resources & Governance, and Program Advisory committees. Gunzenhauser also served on two Music Director Search Committees, the Comprehensive Campaign Taskforce, and the Chorus Council. In 2016, he was the inaugural Symphony’s Distinguished Service Award recipient. “The Symphony has benefitted immeasurably from Gerry’s professional acumen, phenomenal leadership, heartfelt passion, depth of historical institutional knowledge, and the remarkable generosity that he and his beloved wife Alfa shared over the years,” said Merritt Vale.
