Position Summary: Reporting to the Director of Marketing and working collaboratively across departments, the part-time Contract Marketing & Communications Specialist provides hands-on marketing, communications, public relations, and digital content support for the Winston-Salem Symphony. 

The contractor will help enhance the Symphony’s visibility and patron engagement through effective public relations, storytelling, digital communications, website content, social media, and promotional initiatives. This position will support the execution of established organizational and marketing priorities while helping ensure timely, accurate, cohesive, and engaging communications across platforms. 

This contract position is intended to provide focused marketing and communications capacity while allowing the Winston-Salem Symphony flexibility to assess its longer-term staffing and departmental needs. 

Scope of Work

Public Relations and Communications

  • Craft and distribute press releases, media alerts, media kits, and other public relations materials. 
  • Coordinate media interviews and promotional opportunities related to concerts, events, education programs, and community initiatives. 
  • Support storytelling and public relations efforts designed to increase awareness of the Winston-Salem Symphony and its programs. 
  • Collaborate with the Patron, Education, and Philanthropy Teams to help ensure cohesive organizational messaging. 
  • Proofread and edit marketing and communications materials and collateral for accuracy, consistency, and quality. 


Social Media and Digital Marketing

  • Develop and execute social media content in collaboration with the Director of Marketing and appropriate staff. 
  • Create and manage social media and digital promotional campaigns supporting concerts, programs, events, and organizational initiatives. 
  • Manage ongoing social media posting, monitoring, responses, and platform maintenance. 
  • Collaborate on video content production and audience engagement initiatives. 
  • Develop and support digital marketing and public relations strategies designed to increase visibility, engagement, ticket sales, donations, and other organizational goals. 


Website and Content Management

  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing on website content management, ensuring information is current, accurate, engaging, and consistent with the Symphony’s brand. 
  • Make timely website updates related to concerts, events, programs, organizational news, and other initiatives. 
  • Assist with ongoing website maintenance and identify opportunities to improve digital content and the patron experience. 


Marketing Content and Collateral

  • Assist in the development and production of digital marketing collateral, including Fanfare and other promotional communications. 
  • Develop or coordinate written and digital content for concerts, events, education programs, philanthropic initiatives, and institutional communications. 
  • Assist with content development for social media, email, website, video, and other marketing channels. 
  • Support the Director of Marketing with special marketing and communications projects as priorities arise. 


Planning and Project Management

  • Participate in planning, developing, and implementing tactical marketing and communications initiatives that: 
    • Enhance Winston-Salem Symphony visibility. 
    • Support audience growth and diversification. 
    • Increase awareness of education and community engagement programs. 
    • Increase awareness of and support for philanthropic initiatives. 
  • Manage assigned projects and deadlines while coordinating effectively with multiple departments and external partners. 
  • Help maintain consistency of messaging and execution across marketing and communications channels. 


Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience; education in marketing, communications, public relations, arts administration, business, or a related field is preferred. 
  • Strong project management and organizational skills. 
  • Excellent written, verbal, editing, and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. 
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. 
  • Creative thinker who can translate organizational priorities into engaging communications and content. 
  • Flexible, adaptable, collaborative, and comfortable responding to changing priorities. 
  • Strong technological aptitude and experience working with social media platforms, website content management systems, and digital communications tools. 
  • Experience with platforms such as WordPress and Meta for Business or comparable tools is preferred. 
  • Ability to learn and utilize new technologies and platforms as needed. 


Contract Expectations

  • Provide up to 20 hours of services per week based on organizational priorities and workload. 
  • Coordinate priorities and assignments with the Director of Marketing. 
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding Symphony business, patrons, donors, personnel, artists, and organizational information. 
  • Follow applicable Winston-Salem Symphony brand, communications, media, and social media guidelines. 
  • Attend meetings, concerts, events, or other activities when mutually agreed upon and necessary to complete assigned work. 
  • Successfully complete a background check. 
  • The candidate must have their own computer, able to run Adobe Creative Cloud applications as necessary.
  • This is an immediate-start position.

Organization Description: The Winston-Salem Symphony (WSS) is in its 80th season as one of the Southeast’s most highly regarded regional per-service orchestras. Its performance season historically includes masterworks classical concerts, pop guest artists and themes, educational and family concerts, and more.
